Don’t Let Burnout Run Away with You

by Judy Klipin

A couple of weeks ago I was a guest on a radio show. We were talking about Burnout.

I have stopped being amazed by the number of people who listen to and call in on late night radio (I was on from 10 – 11pm) so the constant stream of calls and text messages did not surprise me, although I was a little startled by the range and content.

The calls served to confirm for me something that I have long suspected: Burnout is an epidemic. Men and women, young and old, from all walks of life were calling in to share their stories and ask questions. Housewives, students, young adults in their first jobs, executive business-people…all were complaining of feeling run-down, exhausted, overwhelmed and under-enthused about life in general and their lives in particular.

It is clear that Burnout has moved out of the Boardroom and is present in every nook and cranny of our society.

But what I found to be even more concerning was the number of callers who seemed to have tipped over from Burnout and into depression.

When we ignore and ignore and ignore our body and its needs, eventually our spirit starts to give up hope – and we get depressed.

And having to deal with depression on top of Burnout is a double whammy that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Burnout is serious!

Left unaddressed Burnout becomes even more serious and can lead to full-blown depression, diabetes and even heart disease. Not to mention divorce, disillusionment & dread.

We can’t afford to ignore it any longer.

Please, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of Burnout, don’t wait any longer to get help. Make an appointment to see a doctor, coach or counselor. Or you can sign up for my next online Burnout Recovery course – it starts in November.

But whatever you do, do it soon. You really can’t afford not to.

*Burnout is not merely a state of tiredness and too much to do; it is a deep and profound sense of ongoing exhaustion, of overwhelm and of having nothing left to give. It affects us professionally, personally and psychically. Burnout doesn’t just take the shine off our performance at work, but dulls our experience of every area of our lives.

Feeling overwhelmed in your life, work or relationships?
