Could Do (Even) Better

by Judy Klipin

Do you remember coming home from school with your report card?

In my day we used to spend much of the last day of school decorating the envelopes that they were sent home in. I spent a lot of time trying to make that envelope so eye-catching that it would take attention away from the content of the report itself.

I hoped that my parents would be able to see past the rather dull and predictable “could do better” statements that almost every teacher made almost every term and recognize the sheer brilliance of my creativity on the envelope.

Happily, I am now an adult and I get to write my own report-cards. And I choose to notice and appreciate what I enjoy, what I am good at and where I do well. And then I put more effort and attention into those things, and less into the things that I don’t enjoy and am not particularly good at.

As the end of every year approaches, I take time to write my own report-card. I acknowledge what has and hasn’t worked for me in the year. I identify where I did well and where I did not so well. I pat myself on the back for successes and let myself off the hook for non-successes.

And I use that information to plan for the new year. I decide what I am going to stop trying and doing, what I am going to start trying and doing, and – most importantly – what I am going to try and do even better. Because when I know I am good at something I want to get even better at it.

Next year I’ll be stopping trying to see more than 12 clients a week (otherwise I’ll get burnout again) I’ll be starting to structure my time in a way that allows for proper rest and rejuvenation so I can best serve myself and my clients (and not get burnout again), and I’ll be doing even better at offering products and coaching that support my clients to make the changes they need and want to make (so they don’t get burnout again).

What about you? What will your report-card say? What can you do even better at next year?
