How You Do Anything is How You Do Everything

by Judy Klipin

If you are anything like me (and the rest of the world), you have a few little habits that are microscopic reflections of your way of being in the world more broadly. Perhaps more than a few… If you pick one – any one – smallish habit you will see how it is reflected in bigger ways in other parts of your life.

For instance, I have issues with sugar. I love it. Sweets, chocolate, ice cream, puddings…you name it, I love it. Some would say I am an addict. The thing is, though, that my body is very sensitive and can’t tolerate too much of anything. So, when I have been on a sugar binge, or even just eating more sugar than usual, my mouth breaks out in ulcers. Those ulcers are telling me that what I am putting in my mouth is hurting me. So I cut down on sugar for a while and the ulcers go away.

Until the next time…

On the surface, the sugar bingeing issue seems small and relatively unimportant. But, when I apply the “how you do anything is how you do everything” principle that we coaches love so much, I see that actually it is reflective of a much larger issue; how I treat my body and manage my health.

I love my work. It is my passion, my mission, my gift and my pleasure all in one package. And, again, my body (physical, spiritual and emotional) is very sensitive and can’t tolerate too much of anything, even the things I love. So, when – as often happens – I overdo it and start to do more than I can healthily manage, my body tells me to stop hurting myself. I get tired. I grind my teeth. My stomach gets sore. I get headaches. My throat hurts. Truth be told, I become a bit of a wreck. So I slow down, get more rest, stop taking on so much and feel better.

Until the next time…

We can learn so much about ourselves from examining any habit we have identified and identifying the larger patterns.

You would think that, after so many years, I would have learned how to manage myself better. But, as my body tells me, my ability to self-regulate clearly needs some more work!

What about you? What seemingly small and insignificant things do you do that are reflective of the greater whole of your life? I’d love to hear.
