patterns, themes and puzzles

by Judy Klipin

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is identifying themes.

A client will talk about several seemingly unrelated issues in a session, and I listen and feel what they are assaying in order to pick up on the connections that are there.  One of the things (I like to think) I do best is make sense of the pattern that these ‘things’ create when seen as a whole rather than many different parts.

What is deliciously fascinating to me is that, even in my coaching groups, themes are present.  There are themes associated with the individuals in the group and there are themes present within the group itself.

I am aware that, even in my own group process of my Mastermind meetings, there are themes and patterns at play.  Take this morning’s session for instance: each group member works individually and independently of each other, yet today the sense of connectedness and shared experience was profound.  We are all dealing with similar issues, albeit in different disguises.

I marvel at the synchronicity, the connectedness, the sense of parallel processes and experiences that are present within and for each group member.   It is one of the many reasons I feel so strongly about community, which is the theme of my March newsletter (if you haven’t signed up to receive my monthly newsletter yet, you can do so here).

It is my job as a coach to notice and be mindful of patterns.  To name them and to help make sense of them. To encourage re-patterning where appropriate and to cheer on and support my clients who are developing positive and healthy themes.

It feels like building a jigsaw puzzle; this piece fits here, that piece looks as though it could fit there but it actually belongs somewhere else…

It is so unbelievably satisfying when bits of the puzzle come together and we build a solid picture of understanding.

And I get to build jigsaw puzzles every day!
