Imitation is only flattery when it is honest

by Judy Klipin

Do you know what I really hate?

I hate it when people use my words and my ideas and concepts without acknowledging them as mine.

I am a writer and a coach (and a thought-leader in my field) who puts a great deal of time, energy and effort into creating new and powerful ways for my readers and clients to understand themselves better.

I truly want my thoughts and ideas to help others. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t share them.

But I also want to be recognized as the originator of those thoughts and ideas.

My thoughts and words are my currency.  Just as a painter sells his or her art or a baker his/her bread, I sell my ideas.

To pass off someone else’s ideas as your own is no better than shoplifting or housebreaking.

They say that imitation is the best form of flattery. I say that, unless it is acknowledged as imitation, it is theft.
