Great Things Happen When We Plan With Purpose

by Judy Klipin

I’m the first person to admit that I know absolutely nothing about rugby (I irritate the people I’m watching with by saying things like, “why do they have to be so horrible to each other?” and, “is it really necessary to be so rough?”). I do, however understand things like passion, purpose, meaning and planning how to spend energy. And what we saw on Saturday when our beloved Springboks, led by the ever-inspiring Siya Kolisi, won the Rugby World Cup for their country, was all of that and more.

The game itself was a lesson in team work and achieving a vision, but the speeches afterwards where what really captured all of our hearts and minds. As we listened to the powerful message delivered by both Siya and coach Rassie, it became clear that what they achieved was a perfect example of what happens when you bring together purpose, meaning, passion and planning: a winning result.

Because great things happen when we plan with purpose.

Over and over again, individually and together, the Captain and the Coach spoke of the motivation to bring hope and optimism to South Africa, of the recognition of the privileged position they were in and their determination not to squander it, of the opportunity to bring meaning and joy to 57 million people watching their every move. Equally inspiring and interesting to me, was the repetition of the 6:2 plan. Again, I am a complete dolt when it comes to sport, but I understand this to mean that they kept back some of their strongest players until the last quarter of the game so that they could draw on fresh energy and strength when they needed it most. We can all learn so much about how we ensure that we shore up some reserves to draw on in times of need, how we can make the most of our resilience, and how we can achieve a goal that we are totally committed to.

The Boks planned and executed the perfect game plan. And as a result, they have become not just a beacon of hope and unity for our country, but also a powerful reminder of what happens when we plan with purpose and spend our energy wisely.

I am looking forward to learning more from and being more and more inspired by this team in the future.
