Love and Work

by Judy Klipin

“Love and work are the cornerstones of our humanness.”

Way back in 1930 Freud made the observation that much of our life purpose is influenced by our ability to do meaningful work and our ability to love meaningfully.

Not much has changed since then. We are still defined – rightly or wrongly– by what we do and how we love.

Work and love are the two things that most commonly bring people to coaching.

Love comes in many forms; we love our partners, our children, our parents, siblings, friends, pets… many of us also have deep and abiding affection for our country, our hobbies, our gardens and more. Any expression or experience of attachment to something outside of ourselves is a manifestation of love.

Work, too, can take many different forms. Our work can be paid, unpaid, a means to an end, a vocation, a calling… No matter what our relationship with work may be, as long as we can attach some meaning to the work we do it is a worthwhile endeavour.

We experience discomfort when something – anything – gets in the way of our ability to happily and comfortably engage with work and/or love:

  • Too much.
  • Too little.
  • The wrong kind.
  • Not rewarding enough.
  • Too tiring.
  • Not exciting enough.
  • Too intense.
  • Too demanding.
  • The wrong person/people.
  • The wrong time/place.

These are just some of the issues that concern us all to varying degrees.

Work and love are always going to be the cornerstones of our happiness. The good news is that we can work at making them healthy, robust and rewarding cornerstones. Over and over, I witness clients transforming their relationships with love and work and creating lives of happiness and meaning as a result.
