Time Flies When You are Having Fun

by Judy Klipin

I am amazed how short an hour seems when I am coaching, and how long it seems when I am not.  Coaching hours seem to fly by, while non-coaching hours pass more gradually.

When we are completely engaged in something, totally focused and 100% committed to the task at hand, time seems to speed up.  Whether it coaching, painting, teaching or doing anything we love, the absolute absorption in the task makes us shut out everything around us, including awareness of time passing.

(And when we are doing something we hate the minutes feel like hours – the end of an hour feels like a life time away.)

This morning I had a late cancellation so had an unexpected hour to play with.   What I managed to get done in that hour astonished me.  The time seemed to stretch on and on and on.  Not in a bad way, because I was neutral about what I was doing – neither hating nor loving it, just in a “isn’t it amazing how much I can do in what feels like 5 minutes in the coaching room?” kind of way.  Every time I completed a task I would look at my watch expecting to be the end of the hour, only to find enough time to do something else.

Which serves as confirmation to me (not that I need it) that coaching is what I am supposed to be doing.

I often ask my clients to identify the things in their lives that make time pass very quickly, and those that make time pass slowly.  Not that time is passing any differently of course – it just feels as though it is.

Anything that causes you, or me, or our clients, to experience hours as minutes, is good for us and them.

And things that make minutes feel like hours?  Not so much….

Feeling overwhelmed in your life, work or relationships?
