J is for….

Jupiter

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus and Adult Children are from Jupiter*!

Just as men and women have different ways of thinking, perceiving and behaving, so do adult children.  We have a whole set of characteristics that make us who we are.

Complicated?  Yes.  But also strong, resilient, sensitive, empathic, intuitive, kind, resourceful, dependable, generous, fair, creative, driven, loving, loyal…

When we (and others) understand how we are, we can celebrate our strengths and see all the positives we bring to the world.

*Jupiter, also known as Zeus in Greek mythology, had a tricky childhood until he defeated his father (Saturn) and became king of the gods. He then, in typical adult child “I don’t deserve to have more than others” style, shared the universe with his brothers Neptune and Pluto.

Judging

We do it all the time – consciously and unconsciously.

She’s so lucky.  He’s so handsome.  They look so happy.

I am not good enough.  I am too fat.  I am so stupid.  I will never be happy.  What does everybody think of me?   I should be doing X.  I shouldn’t be doing Y.

We judge others a little bit and we judge ourselves a lot.

And when we think someone else is thin/beautiful/happy/successful it is generally in relation to how we see ourselves, i.e. less thin/beautiful/happy/successful.

Even when we think we are judging others we are usually judging ourselves.

You can stop the judgements by being mindful.  By stopping yourself every time you find yourself in ‘compare and despair’ mode.  By consciously looking for positive things to say to yourself about yourself.

By being kind to yourself.

Just Say No

No explanations, no apologies.  Just a simple no is enough.

As we have already discussed, we often feel that we can’t say no unless we have a good reason, and not wanting to do whatever it is isn’t a good enough reason.  But it is.

You can just say no!

Just Do It

Don’t wait for someone else to give you permission to do or have what you desire.

Give yourself the go-ahead and just do it.
